I believe I have the best block of neighbors in all of riverwest (the riverwest neighborhood is known for its "diversity" - artists, anarchists, crunchy-granola-types and of course thats where the gays are gonna be too...so already the residents are aware of this phenomenon and actually celebrate more than just "tolerate" us LGBT folk. Right away when my partner, at the time, and I moved in we introduced ourselves as a couple and were treated as  such ...I have found generally speaking if one is to "come out" one approaches it as totally natural (not some horrable secret that needs to be revealed) people will respect you and be open with you as open as you are with them...Midwesteners want to be perceived as "fair" -so here's their chance I'm thinking, huh?
