Partners, 4 years
I have been involved in the Gay community since
I went to college in Madison over a decade ago. When I moved to
Milwaukee, I got involved with various organizations here. But
it wasn't until the launch of Gayneighbor.org in 2008 that I
asked myself, "I'm actively involved in the LGBT community,
why not get more involved with my own neighborhood community and
advocate my support?" So, I went and personally introduced
myself to a lesbian couple that just lives down the block. I started
telling my neighbors about my support and different ways they
could show their support.
As a result, my next door neighbor had a gay friend
visiting from out of state, and since she is new to Milwaukee,
she came over and asked me where she should take her friend. I
went out with her, her fiancé, her out-of-town friend,
and my partner, Troy, and we had a blast! Since then, my relationship
has grown with my neighbors.
It doesn't matter if you're gay, straight, bi,
or transgender; you deserve to be treated fairly. I hope that
the laws do change to demonstrate that, but until then, I have
dedicated my career to making sure that LGBT couples have planned
financially until those changes are made.
