Why are your participating in this project? What impact would
you like to have?
I am participating in this project because gay people should
be able to live comfortably and safely, in the same communities
as straight families. Gay families are located all over Wisconsin
and we are just like everyone else except we are partners of same
sex raising kids and working and having fun just like everyone
else. Our family has game night, movie night, nacho night and
family gatherings like any other family.
"We never thought about our mom being gay because she
was just like all the other mom's at school," says
Shaun. "Even though I am not gay I am participating in this
project because I want to support my family."
"It's unfair that all laws don't cover our
family. We deserve the same access to two parents and to be treated
fairly, just like every other family," says Krista.
"Like all our friends, we like to have fun, to shop, go
to movies and watch sporting events. We want to be treated the
same way as any other family," says Ashley.
Do your neighbors know you are gay or love someone
gay or transgender?
"Yes my neighbors know I am a lesbian," says Val.
"I just want them to know we are normal people. We just
act like ourselves and want to be treated the same as everyone
else."
What
advice would have for your neighbors who wanted to show they were
supportive to you or your loved one? Neighbors may be co-workers,
friends, or family. What advice would you have for someone who
wants to be supportive of their gay neighbors?
Please don't be ashamed of who we are or if you hang out
with us you see a friend and You try to ignore us like you were
not with us be yourself around us treat us just as you would treat
your heterosexual friends. If you love having gay and lesbian
friends be proud and stand up and show it.
How could someone show that they are for the fair treatment
of everyone?
By showing love in your community place a rainbow flag on your
porch or have a gay sticker on your car to show you believe in
fair treatment help someone out in the gay community even if you
are straight.
Have you ever been discriminated against for being
LGBT or loving someone gay?
Of course I have I have been egged and called names like ‘Dyke,'
or been told I am going to hell. You name I have heard it. But
I know I am a good person. I have to be myself. I hope someday
that all laws will recognize me and my family fairly. Please keep
working to treat me and my kids like everyone else.
